In Norse mythology, Mjöllnir (Old Norse, Mjǫllnir) is the short-handled hammer of Thor, the god of lightning and thunder.

Thor's hammer is the most powerful weapon of the gods, and thus symbolizes the protection of the universe against the forces of chaos, in particular the giants, the greatest enemies of the gods, who are regularly struck down by Thor with his hammer.
